App Reviews

  • Latest version is a major improvement

    By Yodaman70
Can access all magazines but now no grouping by year. Group by title is best way to find magazine I am looking for. So a little more work is needed but at least lost mags are back.
  • Great Support Service!

UPDATE (17. March 2018): Version 4.5.3 still hasn’t restored offline reading. Customer Service/Tech Support from Zinio continues to be tone-deaf and useless, apparently nobody there actually READS my emails or the review I posted here. PREVIOUS REVIEW: I’ve been a dedicated Zinio customer for at least 4 years. Zinio was my first thought and destination anytime I need to buy magazines, the convenience and utility were unbeatable. I’ve been a magazine junkie for all of my reading life and digital editions have been a godsend for me, relieving me and my house of the resultant physical clutter. Fast-forward to last week when Zinio released version 4.5.0. First, I find out that the update wiped out my entire downloaded library, there was no ability/option to bulk re-download it. Each item had to be individually and manually replaced. The second big issue is the numerous missing items from my Zinio library on my iPad. This includes stand alone issues and subscriptions. When I go to Zinio.com and login to my account, there they are. But I normally read my magazines via my iPad, not my desktop computer. Zinio responded to my support inquiry on this issue with the explanation that age-restricted material couldn’t be displayed on iOS devices. There was no mention of that restriction in the change-log for version 4.5. Interestingly, Amazon’s Kindle app for iOS seemingly has no problem with this (nor does Netflix or HBOGo). I’ve subscribed to “Maxim” (one of the so-called age-restricted publications) for over 3 years and read it on my iPad via the Zinio app until last week! The third HUGE issue is that the ability to access my DOWNLOADED content for offline reading seems to have been removed. I cannot understand this at all. I do most of my magazine reading in situations where I have no connectivity: during flights and at work. Times and places where wifi is, at best, unreliable and, most often, completely unavailable. So why on earth would Zinio remove this option? Once again, there is no mention of this VITAL change in the notes for this update. The No Offline Reading issue is a fatal dealbreaker for me and in response I’m voting with my feet and my wallet. I have set all of my recurring Zinio subscriptions to end and have started new replacement subscriptions at Amazon. Until they restore offline reading, I will not purchase any new content from Zinio. Zinio’s customer/tech support response to my concerns has been pathetic at best. The tone of their correspondence has been belittling and condescending. My true rating for Zinio is ZERO stars, but because the App Store doesn’t allow that, they’re getting one. Not that they earned it.
  • Zinio works great

The app lets you see the page and then view easy to read text. I can enlarge pictures to see details.
  • V4.6 is terrible. Older versions were great

Recent upgrades 4.6 and I think 4.5 have turned ZINIO from a great product to a terrible one. Also it no longer even works on my original iPad 1 And on my brand new iPad Pro although it works it is no longer a pleasure to use. First it deleted all my magazines. Redownloading is taking forever. hundreds of magazines gone. Luckily I wasn’t in the middle of a trip. Second it is incredibly jerky scrolling through my magazines (they used to organize by date now everything is on one screen. Which I wouldn’t mind if the performance was ok but it is not). Third and Worst is just basic reading. Just got Money Magazine and Dwell April 2018 issue. Viewing and reading in normal (pdf) mode on my iPad text looks terribly blocky and ugly. They seem to have replaced the older higher resolution magazine download with low resolution. They claim the improvement is an enhanced text mode but that is useless because there are no pictures! I want to read a magazine with pictures in pdf mode. It’s inconceivable why they would have such low quality scans given the prevalence of retina displays. And finally just paging through an already downloaded magazine it has very long pauses every once in a whole to load subsequent pages. ZINIO please don’t degrade the quality of your product. Update- I found that when I deleted the Money April 2018 issue and redownloaded it this time it downloaded a high resolution version. So it seems sometimes it may download a low res one for unknown reasons which I have no control over.

Would like the magazines that load for reading, when done would disappear - the viewing gets clogged up with read and to be read magazines.. archive should delete the read magazine...
  • One Step Forward, Three Steps Back

    By Rawson819
I was quite happy with the state of the app until this last update. Like others, I was annoyed that I lost all my downloads, not because I had to re-download them, but rather because I relied on the app to assist me in recalling what I had not yet read. A little communication (I.E. an email) that this was going to happen would have gone a long way - I would have simply clicked a few screenshots. Even more annoying, is the need re-archive multiple years of magazines ONE AT A TIME! The ability to bulk delete downloaded magazines is present, but not bulk archive. Issues also seem slower to download since the update. Lastly, I was a HUGE fan of the ability to view/sort magazines by year and months - PLEASE restore this feature. I was also partial to the dark background and hope that if you won’t dump the white completely, you’ll at least consider giving users the option. This isn’t a huge deal, but worth mentioning. Update: I see Night Mode referenced in update notes and in How to Navigate; however, nowhere do I find the ability to engage this feature. But happy to see it’s on the radar.

I purchased a magazine but cannot read it. Keep getting "We are experiencing problems. Please try again later."

I can’t stand the new layout introduced with the latest app update. I much preferred the monthly layout. It allowed me to quickly see, read and delete magazines. Please go back!
  • 4.5.x updates don’t download new content

    By John_B
Since the 4.5.0 update — and continuing through 4.5.2 — new content is no longer showing up in the app. The only magazines I can read are the ones I had already acquired before the 4.5.0 update broke the app. I can still get to the content via the web, but that requires a live internet connection, and the whole purpose of this app is to be able to download the magazines on Wi-Fi, not needlessly burn up cellular data.
