App Reviews

  • Inexcusable

This app is incredibly buggy, to the point that it's clear the Economist group has no respect for its subscribers.
  • What happened to speed control

Should have never updated this. What happened?!! I prefer to listen and now there is only one speed which is way too slow. Please fix! Nov 15 update: still haven't fixed the playback speed button. It's there, but you can't see it -- like a ghost. Now when the audio is faster it is distorted and sounds terrible. How could this continue to be a problem?!
  • Always the best

The Economist has always been, and we dearly hope it remains so, the paragon of news reporting. Not only are its analyses thorough and insightful, but its rendering of the English language exhibits an unearthly elegance throughout.
  • Horrible App

I would love to subscribe... IF the developers of this app would make it usable. The insistence on making users download issues is horrible, and the audio playback is nearly unusable. Just do standard modern app design, and you'll be ready to play with the big dogs...
  • Why does this app keep getting worse?

The Economist digital department should get its act together, because the quality of the iPhone app denotes a crass lack of concern for subscribers. After the audio quality decreased, the play speed button has now been hidden (the functionality is still available if you know where to press, which is laughable). The menu is difficult to parse, because it does not summarize the sections anymore. Finally, how difficult can it be to release a version formatted for the size of the new iPhone X? I believe that developers would have gotten advance notice of the new phone’s specs.

  • Horrible app

This is the worst version of The Economist’s app. Every time you open the app, you have to download an issue all over again, and then download the audio version again. Every single time. I tried changing various settings to see if anything works, but nope, if you closed the app and you opened it again after a while, you will have to download the issue again. Just takes away any ease you can think of in reading or listening to the magazine. Horrible app. What’s worse is, I sent an email to customer service a few weeks back. I haven’t received a response yet. Very dissatisfied.
  • Horrible new version

The current version of this app is buggy and poorly designed. When you switch away from the app without shutting it down, the app loses your place. You’re taken back to the table of contents. Worse, you can’t count on being able to read content you’ve downloaded offline. The app frequently prompts you to re-download issues you’ve already downloaded. If you don’t have an internet connection at that point, you’re out of luck. The previous version of the app didn’t have these issues. Is the Economist trying to drive away readers who use mobile devices?
  • Deletes my audio playlist everytime I open the app

I have had to download each issue everytime I open the app. My playlist deletes each time. Super frustrating and makes the app unusable
  • No ability to adjust playback speed

The only thing I use the app for is to listen to the audio edition. The latest update removes the ability to adjust playback speed making it practically useless. Every other podcast/audio app includes this basic feature. Why on earth would The Economist remove it?
